VIVATO AND PARTNERS BRINGING BROADBAND WIRELESS - INCLUDING
LIVE VIDEO - TO PLEASANT HILL, CA POLICE
Vivato's High-Throughput Wi-Fi Approach Makes Video Possible
SPOKANE, WA, May 10, 2005 - Vivato, Inc., a leading provider
of extended-range Wi-Fi equipment, and GCS Technologies, a network
design and systems integration firm, have begun installing a Wi-Fi
system for the City of Pleasant Hill, CA that will provide innovative
broadband communications capabilities - including live video streams
of crime intervention - to the police department.
"This installation is a marriage of technologies that will
provide Pleasant Hill police officers a Wi-Fi solution that is among
the most technologically sophisticated in the world," said
Glenn Booth, Vivato marketing director. "Because Vivato's high-powered
Wi-Fi architecture requires far fewer links than typical mesh networks,
it can accommodate the heavy bandwidth requirements of live video
feeds between police cars and police headquarters."
Booth said the Pleasant Hill Wi-Fi network will eventually cover
the entire city of 33,000 people located 25 miles east of San Francisco.
In addition, he said the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office is currently
evaluating a similar system from Vivato and GCS, and other county
law enforcement agencies may ultimately join a proposed county-wide
Wi-Fi network.
"The potential exists for the Contra Costa County region to
become a showplace for the advantages of broadband wireless communications
via Wi-Fi," said Booth. Using Wi-Fi to complement the Pleasant
Hill PD's radio communications will grant officers Internet access
to records and information concerning Amber alerts, mug shots and
email. The video component of the system utilizes mobile Digital
Video Recorders (DVRs) and cameras manufactured by Aventura Technologies.
"Because the Aventura equipment utilizes H.264 video compression,
it can send files from one-quarter to one-half smaller than possible
with other compression technologies," Booth said. The cameras
will be used to monitor police activity as it happens, facilitating
immediate backup for officers on patrol as well as video records
of arrests and other interaction with criminals and suspects.
"After thoroughly researching the available Wi-Fi technologies,
we were convinced the Vivato solution was the best in terms of range,
coverage and economics," said James Ziegelman, network manager,
Pleasant Hill. "The high-powered Vivato base stations provide
greater coverage with fewer components, greater throughput with
less latency and a lower Total Cost of Ownership than competing
systems," Ziegelman added.
Dave Eary, president of GCS Technologies which is working with
Vivato to install the system, praised the Vivato and Aventura equipment
for its ability to meet demanding voice, video and data requirements
of the Pleasant Hill police department.
"It was only by combining Vivato's unique phased-array antenna
approach with Aventura's state-of-the-art video equipment that GCS
was able to design an economical Wi-Fi network," Eary said.
The Vivato approach to Wi-Fi incorporates phased-array antennas
and a patented PacketSteering technology to provide up to
12 times the coverage of competing Wi-Fi systems. By requiring fewer
components, a Vivato installation also features lower networking
and maintenance costs.
